How to help

The Livestock Guardian Dog Programme team was invited to design and develop a series of tests to identify and evaluate the specific behavioural characteristics of livestock guardian dogs – characteristics essential to their original function of protecting flocks. The tests were carried out during CARRANCAS 2012, the first working camp with livestock protection dogs, organised by Canil d'Alpetratínia, held from 1 to 2 September at Monte Visconde do Alcaide (Fundão). The 13 participating dogs, belonging to the Serra da Estrela Dog breed, underwent a series of 13 sequential temperament tests and 1 final sheep interaction test.
