The new LIFE project began in September, entitled Best Practices for Wolf Conservation in Typically Mediterranean Areas, which aims to promote the stable presence of wolves in rural areas of Mediterranean Western Europe, where cultural habits of coexistence have been lost, through the reduction of conflicts with human activities. This project, acronym MED‑WOLF, has a duration of four and a half years and will intervene particularly in the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco. The main actions include wolf monitoring, habitat potential studies, public attitudes studies, actions to prevent poaching and illegal use of poisons, and promotion of livestock protection measures. Several Portuguese and Italian organisations are involved, with Grupo Lobo responsible for national coordination.
