Signatus Program

The conservation of a species implies knowledge of the factors that influence it, and the implementation of measures that mitigate or eliminate these factors that threaten the viability of its populations, so that the danger of extinction of the species is considerably reduced. To this end, the Signatus Program was developed in 1987, representing a multidisciplinary approach established to contribute to a wolf conservation plan in Portugal.

The Iberian Wolf

The Iberian Wolf, the subspecies that inhabits the Iberian Peninsula, has the scientific name Canis lupus signatus and was described in 1907 by the Spanish zoologist Angel Cabrera. It differs from the wolf that inhabits the rest of Europe essentially by being smaller and by the coloration of its fur, which is more yellowish-brown. In addition, it has stronger colors and a different color pattern on its face and muzzle. It is estimated that around 2000 wolves survive in the Iberian Peninsula, of which 300 are in Portuguese territory.

Iberian Wolf Recovery Center

The Iberian Wolf Recovery Center (CRLI) was created by Grupo Lobo in 1987 with the aim of providing a suitable captive environment for wolves that cannot live in the wild: animals that are victims of traps, illegal captivity, or from other parks and zoos.

Environmental Education

Environmental Education

In accordance with the objectives defined in the Signatus Program, the Lobo Group has given special attention to environmental awareness and education, participating in and carrying out various activities that involve the public in the knowledge and conservation of the wolf. This makes it possible to foster a change in behaviors and attitudes towards biodiversity conservation, particularly that of the Iberian Wolf.

Livestock Guardian Dog Program

Livestock Guardian Dog Program

Livestock guardian dogs have been used by shepherds for thousands of years and are part of the traditional herding system used in Portugal. The Lobo Group aims to contribute to the conservation of the Iberian Wolf in Portugal by recovering and promoting the correct use of national dog breeds as an effective way to protect livestock, reducing damage caused by wolves and thus increasing tolerance towards this predator.
