The publication of this book by Editorial Bizâncio, supported by ENEOP 2, aims to promote the Livestock Guardian Dog Programme that Grupo Lobo has been developing since 1996, as a practical and successful measure for the conservation of the Iberian wolf in Portugal, and also marks the celebration of 25 years of this environmental NGO, founded in 1985. The Livestock Guardian Dogs book introduces these special dogs, selected thousands of years ago to enable better coexistence with predators. The book begins with the origins of these dogs, then introduces the national breeds, discusses their behaviour, functional aspects and effectiveness, their role in the pastoral world and their importance in predator conservation efforts, concluding with the presentation of the Livestock Guardian Dog Programme and its main results in the conservation of the Iberian wolf in Portugal. The texts, authored by Paulo Caetano (journalist) and Silvia Ribeiro (biologist at Grupo Lobo), combine reportage with a more scientific approach, and are illustrated with photographs by Joaquim Pedro Ferreira. The book was launched in different regions of the country, in order to facilitate the attendance of interested livestock farmers and dog breeders. See the photo gallery at:
