How to help

In the last two years, 6 livestock guardian dogs integrated by Grupo Lobo have died as victims of poisoning. This number is quite high compared to the total of 8 animals killed by the same cause since the beginning of this Grupo Lobo project. In fact, poisoning currently accounts for 27% of total recorded mortality. The illegal use of poisoned baits has serious consequences for wild and domestic species, as well as for Public Health. One of the biggest problems with the use of poisons is that it is a non‑selective method, meaning it causes the death of many animals other than those it targets. Guardian dogs are therefore often accidental victims of this practice, causing great losses to livestock farmers. Quality guardian dogs take at least 1‑2 years to reach maturity and begin to be useful, requiring an investment of effort and money. The Antídoto Portugal Programme is a joint initiative of several state and non‑governmental organisations, including Grupo Lobo, created with the aim of combating the illegal use of poisons.
