Workshop on Evaluation of Damage Prevention Measures

The workshop on evaluating measures to prevent damage caused by the wolf, organised on 8 November in Grosseto (Italy) under the LIFE MedWolf Project, brought together around 35 managers and researchers and aimed to share experiences and promote debate on the standardisation of methodologies leading to a reliable and scientifically grounded evaluation. An initial review of recent articles highlighting the need for more and better evaluation of the effectiveness of prevention measures was presented, followed by several communications on various case studies in different contexts. The various analyses implemented in the Livestock Guardian Dog Programme, aimed at studying and evaluating dog behaviour at different stages of their development and production systems, were presented, as well as analyses to quantify damage variation and producer acceptance of the measure. In selecting the most appropriate methodology, account must be taken of the reliability of results, sample size, the technical expertise required, and the time/cost spent in its application, which should be related to the study objectives, duration and available budget.
